National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.

National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

Awarded by the Department of Defense to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.

Hertz Foundation

This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students to conduct research in other countries in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. This program holds an annual competition.

Ford Fellowship

Through its Fellowship Program, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties. Administered by the National Research Council (NRC) since 1979, these programs provide fellowship support at the predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral levels.

Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program

The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission.

GEM Fellowship Program

GEM’s principal activity is the provision of graduate fellowships at the MS and PhD levels coupled with paid summer internships. GEM also offers fellowships without paid summer internships through our GEM University and Associate Fellowship programs.

GEM Fellowship

American Association of University Women (AAUW) 

Grants are open to scholars who identify as women and who are conducting basic research in engineering, medicine, or physical or biological sciences. AAUW follows the National Science Foundation’s definition of basic research: “activity aimed at acquiring new knowledge or understanding without specific immediate commercial application or use.”
